Hi artists and friends,

We’re glad to share with you 3 drawings from our PORTRAIT AS STORYTELLING workshop (24/04), session 9/9 of our Drawing Sesh in the Spring Term.

The portrait in relation to its surroundings

For 2 hours we drew the portrait as a means to tell a story, looking at relevant contemporary painters in the process, including Njideka Akunyili-Crosby (b.1983, Nigeria), Titus Kaphar (b.1976, USA) and Claudette Johnson (b.1959, UK).

We could’ve add

In the second hour we drew from life, with Virgile as our model posing in front of one of our sets. The idea was to draw the portrait in relation to the background, in this case an imaginary island in the middle of a tropical ocean, inspired by the isle of Neverland in Peter Pan.
